What is Creativity?
Is it the ability to create? To come up with a new idea? The American
Heritage Dictionary defines creativity as, "characterized by originality."
These explanations are vague and abstract. And few of us have the
luxury of such abstract thinking under the pressure of even an average
workday.
A Formula for Originality?
Take heart. Mozart said, "I have never made the slightest effort to
compose anything original." When we need to come up with ideas that
are regarded as creative, what we are really asking ourselves is to
solve a problem. And, usually there are very logical, sensible steps
to arrive at extraordinary solutions. In fact, here's a formula to
stimulate your creative problem solving. (We often use this formula
to come up with unique ideas for our clients.)
1. Make the commonplace new. Bear the following
words in mind: substitution, combination, adaptation, magnification,
diminution, rearrangement.
2. Make sure it's a good idea. Check your possible solutions
against this list. Is your idea appropriate, practical, easily understood,
simple, satisfying?
